What Is A DENTAL EMERGENCY | Best Kids Dentist - Family Dentist Brooklyn

Last updated 7 years ago

Despite what your children may tell you, not all oral pain constitutes a dental emergency. In fact, many pediatric dentists will tell you that dental emergencies are rare. However, because kids tend to play rough, they do occur from time to time.

Take a look at the information below to better determine when your child is suffering from a dental emergency. You’ll also find tips on how to handle these turbulent times.

A Cracked Tooth:

Children will often crack their tooth crunching on hard candies. If you’re child doesn’t practice proper dental care, then he or she may be more susceptible to cracking their teeth. Often, your child will crack a molar, which can be quite painful. If this should happen to your child, then make sure the child spits out any remaining tooth fragment. Then, have your child rinse with warm salt water. Next, give your child the recommended dose of pain medication and cover the tooth with sugar free wax. Make an appointment with your pediatric dentist as soon as possible.

A Loose Bracket:

It is not uncommon for a bracket on your child’s braces to come loose while eating, chewing gum, or replacing rubber bands. This is not typically painful, but it can cause slight discomfort. If this should happen, then have your child place a good amount of wax over the bracket to prevent it from scraping the sides of the gums and cheek. Then, call the pediatric orthodontist.

A Gash in the Gums:

If food becomes lodged in your child’s gums, then they could quickly become inflamed and swollen. If this occurs, have your son or daughter rinse with warm salt water swiftly to try and dislodge the contaminants. You could also try flossing to remove any stuck food particles. Next, give your child the recommended dose of Aspirin or other pain reliever and tell them to avoid eating until the swelling dissipates. Then, call your pediatric dentist.
