A Parent's Guide to Dental Care for Children

Last updated 6 years ago

Basic dental care consists of brushing and flossing daily, eating a healthy diet, and visiting the dentist at regular intervals. Children learn habits easily, so get them in the habit of taking care of their teeth. Doing so will help prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and a number of other problems.

Brush and Floss Regularly

As soon as your child’s first tooth comes in, you should teach them to brush regularly. By brushing once in the morning and once before bed, your child is far less likely to develop such problems as tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Brushing also helps remove plaque, which can lead to tooth decay. You’ll want to teach your child how to brush properly. This means brushing the insides, outsides, and tops of their teeth. Emphasize that they needn’t brush with too much force, because doing so can cause irritation. Besides, plaque comes off rather easily with a gentle brush. Lastly, in addition to brushing twice each day, your child should floss once daily. This will begin as soon as his or her teeth start touching together. Ask your dentist for tips on how to floss.

Eat a Healthy Diet

By feeding your child a balanced and healthy diet, you can help them develop strong teeth, healthy gums, and prevent tooth decay. Be sure to feed your child a variety of foods from each of the five major food groups. Avoid sugars and processed carbohydrates, and replace them with whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Visit the Dentist Regularly

Schedule an appointment with your child’s pediatric dentist every six months to check that they’re in good health. Dental problems generally develop early in life, so regular check-ups are important to monitor development. If your child complains of toothaches or irritation, schedule a visit immediately.
