Brushing, flossing, and regular trips to the pediatric dentist are all important to your child’s dental health, but without the proper dietary choices, your efforts could all go to waste. What you put on your child’s plate has a lot to do with how healthy his or her smile is during childhood and beyond. To maintain your child’s dental health, avoid serving up the following foods:
1. Chewy Fruit-Flavored Snacks
Kids love the sweet, fruity flavors of these snacks, but they’re loaded with sugar. The high sugar content of these foods will encourage tooth decay. Real fruits have sugar as well, but the sugar content is lower, and real fruit has fiber, which will help boost your child’s dental health and general health.
Regular soda has an extremely high sugar content, which wreaks havoc on kids’ teeth. Even diet soda is a bad choice for your little one’s smile. Diet soda contains acids, which erode tooth enamel and make your child’s teeth weak.
3. Sticky Foods
Sticky foods present a lot of problems to young teeth. First, since they are hard to chew, they can be damaging to developing teeth. Second, sticky foods hang on to teeth longer than other foods, encouraging the development of plaque and tooth decay. Lastly, sticky teeth tend to be high in sugar, which also fosters tooth decay.
4. Citrus Fruits and Juice
Citrus fruits are very high in acid, which will damage your child’s tooth enamel. Juices are the worst offenders, because they are both acidic and excessively sugary, but even whole citrus fruit can cause damage. Talk to your pediatric dentist about whether occasional citrus fruits are acceptable for your child.
